Feng Shui literally means Wind (Feng) and Water (Shui).
Elements associated in the Chinese culture with good harvest and good health. Wind is the carrier of energy or chi', representing the principles of change or transformation in nature. Water is said to hold or retain energy or chi', representing the principle of stability.
Feng Shui allocates natural principles such as the five elements, (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), with cardinal and inter-cardinal directions. Also included are the elements of yin and yang, color and shapes. These concepts are combined and applied to a structure or space. A Feng Shui Consultation will determine the inherent harmony and disharmony within a structure or space and it's relationship to it's human element.
The Three Gifts
There are many factors affecting the chi' flow in Feng Shui. They are known as the Three Gifts, Heaven chi', Earth chi', and Human chi', the three levels of energy. Heaven chi' includes the moon and stars and the sun above, the cycles of change (seasons) and time. Earth chi' on a topographical level involves the land formations of mountains, valleys, rivers and watercourses, magnetic fields and lay lines. On an environmental level it involves structures, form and space, color, sound and lighting. Human chi' on a social level involves family and relatives, neighbors and social contacts. Human chi' on a personal level includes memories, personality, sensitivity, ideals and visions.
Yin and Yang
The concept of yin and yang is that all things relate to one another and are in balance with each other. Yin is associated the elements of the earth - body, matter, substance. Yang is associated with the heavens, that which is vibrational and unseen - spirit, air and sound. Within yang there is an element of yin and within yin there is an element of yang. Where yin is cold, dark and still, yang is hot, bright and active. Yin is female, negative, right and even, yang is male, positive, left and odd. Yin and Yang can also be applied to directions, architecture as well as our bodies organs and the foods we eat.
